The MotorExpo show in Canary Wharf this year is only half ful and does not spill out to Cabot Square like it did in the last few years. It is held earlier this year and thus suffers from the gushing winds and lashing rains all week too. The crowd seems to be a bit smaller this year. There is a noticeable trend of new hybrid cars from a number of manufacturers such as Lexus, Audi and Toyota. Honda, Renault and Peugeot are missing this year. The highlight of the show is probably the Landrover stand at the back of Jubilee Place, which allows people to sign up and took an obstacle tour with their flagship model. Pretty impressive how it negotiate the ramps at an impossible angle, although I can't help but feeling the ramps are tailored made for the cars and how it performs in real mud might be very different from the artificial props there. As usual, I managed to snap a few keepsake photos for keepsake.

The body scanners are coming !

Canary Wharf is getting a new body scanner following the successful trial at Paddington. Passengers will be expected to be tested at random to detect if they are carrying explosives or have been in contact with explosives. This measure must be seen as a deterrent, as I am not sure how affective it will be to actually prevent somebody from trying to blow up the trains. The reason I say this is because Canary Wharf is the station most people will arrive at in the morning rush hour, not where they depart from, which means if somebody were planning to blow up the trains, they would have done so already before reaching Canary Wharf. Still, most people seem to be happy to see it there and do not mind the inconvenience of being stopped and searched. It goes to show the psychological conmfort factor can not be underestimated. What do you think ?

Conflicting signals from All Bar One

The trendy All Bar One bar in front of Canary Wharf's Jubilee Line station seems to be sending out conflicting signals to the punters currently. The entrance seems to indicate that as long as you are potty trained, you can frequent this establishment, and yet, next to it there is another sign that says "Children are not allowed". I asked All Bar One's front man Nene , and he did not provide me with any more clarification into this matter than my muddled interpretation of the rules. Ah well, I guess I will have to try to book the kids' birthday party there next time, just to satisfy my curiosity.

The sun refused to come out today, so the sunworshippers have decided to stay in their offices too. I will be out and about with my faithful camera later in the week to try my luck again.

Are you a Barclays thinker ?

I am sure Barclays is a good company to work for, like most other banks around Docklands, but honestly, I look at these blue adverts that are pasted all over Canary Wharf Jubilee Line station, and can not help but wondering if they are getting their money's worth for these cheesy lines. I can not see how anyone reading them will rush to Barclays' door and ask for a job. There were some other banners before Barclays took over the station, advertising the London Olympics 2012 bid, and those images of the athletes sprinting over London's landmarks. Now that was cool ! Wish I'd taken some pictures then.

Objets d'art caused major security scare
A couple of days ago there was a security scare resulting from some art project being mistaken as terrorist devices due to the fact that they were left in close proximity to some busy Underground stations like Sheperd's Bush, Hammersmith etc. Makes you think the tension is still there and the nerves are still raw. I guess in a way we need to lighten up a bit to put up with the commuting chore, and art might be the necessary ingredient. Having said that, if I happen to see long tube shape objects in London these days which resemble those bazooka things, you will have problem keeping up with me running in the opposite direction !

Wot no escalator and no Drain ?
[Waterloo]
The main escalators between the National Rail concourse and Jubilee line seems to have been out of action for longer than I can remember. And now, the Waterloo and City line has been closed for maintenance until September. Sounds like there is no end of this hassle !
Waterloo is an international gateway to Europe, so I think they should have tried a bit harder to minimise the disruption and present a better image to our visitors. It does not seem to be a problem with funding, more like the project planning bit that is a bit dodgy. Evidence is the escalator has been fenced off but there does not seem to be too much work going on most of the time I have been through the station.
